Emily Dickenson

Through HathiTrust I identified a 1998 work by Golden which includes a discussion of Weil and Dickenson.  So far I have a found a total of three works comparing Weil and Dickenson:

Bombaci, Nancy. 2013. "Autistic Thought and the Modern Mysticism of Simone Weil and Emily Dickinson."  Studies in Spirituality 23:213-238.

Borgna, Eugenio. 2016. L'indicibile tenerezza : In cammino con Simone Weil Milano: Feltrinelli.

Golden, Stephanie. 1998. Slaying the Mermaid: Women and the Culture of Sacrifice New York: Harmony Books.

HathiTrust

HathiTrust is a great source for identifying books and journal issues on Weil.   If you are affiliated with an institution that is a member of HathiTrust,  once logged in, you currently also have access to the digital full text of a significant number of the works.  Due to the pandemic,  HathiTrust is providing  temporary access to the digital full text of works in their collection that are held in the print collection of your institution.   This is in addition to those works which are in the public domain or provided as open access.   A full-text keyword search for "Simone Weil" limited to works published since 1995  retrieves over 15,000 items of which, for me, currently over 4,000 are available with full text!  Even when the full text is not available the ability to conduct a limited search is helpful for identifying the extent of possible content in the book.

Bibliography updated

The Simone Weil Bibliography has been updated with 33 new records, the majority of which have been published this past year.   It now contains 50 records for  2020 publications.  I currently  have a further 60 titles published in 2020 for which I am waiting to view a copy when the pandemic is over and interlibrary loans are once again available.

The online bibliography now contains 5, 036 works.

Italian legal and political philosopher Norberto Bobbio

After a long hiatus,  I am back working on the Simone Weil Bibliography.   I have located a 2018 thesis focussed on Weil and Bobbio as well as an article in the papers of the Italian Society for Law and Literature:

Prete, Mariangela del. 2018. "Dalla guerra alla costruzione della pace. La riflessione filosofica di Simone Weil e Norberto Bobbio."  MA Thesis, Philosophy, Università degli Studi di Urbino Carlo Bo.  (for partial contents see -   https://www.docsity.com/it/dalla-guerra-alla-costruzione-della-pace-la-riflessione-filosofica-di-simone-weil-e-norberto-bobbio/5101768/)

Artaud and Weil

Just last month an article by Yves Schulze comparing Weil and Artaud appeared in Modern & Contemporary France in the early articles posted online, entitled " Prendre sur soi : Cruauté et charité dans l’écriture d’Antonin Artaud et de Simone Weil", DOI: 10.1080/09639489.2020.1749582.

While in an earlier blog post on Weil and Judaism I mentioned the work by Lotringer, I have discovered a few other works comparing Artaud and Weil:

Chiappone, Francis. 2005. Review of Les Promesses de l’oeuvre, Artaud, Nietzsche, Simone Weil, by Jean Michel Rey. Cahiers Simone Weil 28 (3):310-312.
Garcia Vila, Antonio. 2013. "Espectros de Artaud."  El Viejo Topo 301:48-61.
Lotringer, Sylvère. 2003. "Artaud était-il chrétien?" In Fous d'Artaud, 13-38. Paris: Sens and Tonka.  Extensive discussion comparing  Artuad's and Weil's relationship to Judaism and Christianity
Rey, Jean-Michel. 2003. Les promesses de l'oeuvre : Artaud, Nietzsche, Simone Weil. Paris: Desclée De Brouwer.

Elizabeth Bishop

Marcel Inhoff has just published the article "“Ladies and Gents, Ladies and Gents” – Mary McCarthy, Elizabeth Bishop and Female Autobiographies in American Postwar Literature" in Women’s Studies: An Interdisciplinary Journal. It is available to subscribers as an early article published online May 13, 2020.

In this article Inhoff extensively discusses Weil's impact on McCarthy and Bishop. Inhoff notes that "Bishop's connection to Weil has never been explored" (p. 5) but I have located one article with considerable discussion of Weil and Bishop:

Lafford, Erin. 2011. "Elizabeth Bishop's  'Dappled Thing': Visual Counterpoint and Devotional Attention in 'The Man-Moth'    "  Literature and Theology 25 (3):252-267. doi: http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/litthe/frr021.

Joan Dargan's 1999 book Simone Weil: Thinking Poetically also includes some reference to Weil and Bishop.

Few more works on John Rawls and Weil

Four years ago I posted one reference I located on Rawls and Weil, the work by Heifetz and Minelli.  Today, I just located a 2018 thesis focussed on Rawls and Weil and have also identified two other works touching on Rawls and Weil.

Weil's impact in Sweden

Just added a work by Marta Ronne "Decoding a Genius Mind - The French Philosopher Simone Weil and the Swedish Critic Margit Abenius" published in From Darwin to Weil: Women as Transmitters of Ideas pp. 139-157.  This work talks about how Abenius introduced Weil to Sweden.

Back in a 2012 post I noted then that I only had located 6 works published in Swedish. The online bibliography currently includes 20 works in Swedish on Weil and I have a few more I am working on.  The National Library of Sweden's catalogue is a great source to identify both Swedish books and articles on Weil.

Weil and Mauriac

In March of 2019  I spent a wonderful 3 days at the Library of Congress  reviewing the last 7 years of issues of Cahiers  to verify articles and to identify new articles from their excellent listings of recent publications.   One such article identified by these listings at the back of each volume is the 1998 work by Olivier on Weil and Mauriac.  I have listed below this work and others collected on Mauriac and Weil published since 1995.

Croc, Paul. 1995. "François Mauriac et Simone Weil."  Cahiers Simone Weil 18 (2):155-167.
Ollivier, Sophie. 1998. "Force et justice chez Simone Weil et François Mauriac."  Nouveaux cahiers François Mauriac 6:58-71.
Turai, Laura. 2007. "Mauriac et la pensée weilienne."MA, Université Catholique Pázmány Péter de Piliscsaba
Gutbrod, Gizella. 2010. "Notes sur le rapport entre Simone Weil et François Mauriac."  Acta Academiae Paedagogicae Agriensis Sectio Romanica 36:23-38. http://francia.ektf.hu/kiadvanyok/acta_1.pdf
Gutbrod, Gizella. 2017. "Notes sur le rapport entre Simone Weil et François Mauriac."  Cahiers Simone Weil 40 (1):51-70.
Touzot, Jean. 2019. "Weil Simone 1909-1943." In Dictionnaire François Mauriac, edited by Caroline Casseville and Jean Touzot, 1163-1164. Paris: Honoré Champion.

Theses on Weil - out there but hidden!

A search on DART - Europe E-Theses Portal provides you with access to over 800,000 open access theses but a search for  Simone Weil only retrieves 19 items! This result is not very reflective of what is actually available!

So far I have collected over 300 theses published since 1995 (vast majority were published outside the US) and over 50 percent are available open access!  288 of the discovered theses are currently listed in the online bibliography

Porete and Weil

My thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by COVID -19.   While I am sheltering in place, I will try to use this time to work on the bibliography.

Today, I located this reference to a work comparing Weil and Marguerite Porete:

Nogueira, Maria Simone Marinho. 2019. "Aniquilamento e descriação: uma aproximação entre Marguerite Porete e Simone Weil."  Trans/Form/Ação 42:193-216. https://doi.org/10.1590/0101-3173.2019.v42esp.11.p193

A search on the Simone Weil Bibliography online retrieves a further 6 references on this topic.

Gravity and Grace - index to location of quotations in Weil's notebooks

The American Weil Society has posted this helpful guide compiled by Martin Andic and edited by Eric Springsted.

Notebook Sources for Gravity and Grace Quotations

Also available here: https://docslib.org/notebook-sources-for-gravity-and-grace-quotations

In his introduction Springsted highlights the issue of the loss of Weil's original context in Gustav Thibon's compilation of her papers and notebooks:

--> "Yet, GG is still widely read and deservedly so. One should keep it on her night stand. But, truth be told, for anyone who would write on Weil, GG is sand that one should carefully avoid building a house on.  In GG the entries are striking and well worth quoting and thinking about. But they do not reflect Weil’s own ordering of them, or anything even close, even within separate chapters, to the flow of her thought."
